Sargassum, a brown, foul-smelling algae washes ashore in massive quantities, and it’s been getting worse every year due to warmer ocean temperatures and agricultural runoff from the Amazon basin, which feed sargassum growth in the open Atlantic before currents push it into the Caribbean. 🌿🏖️

But don’t let sargassum ruin your vacation. Here are five spots within thirty minutes of town where the water is always clear — a mix of cenotes and lagoons that locals have been swimming in long before Tulum became Tulum. 💦
