For the second year in a row, the most popular name for baby girls was Charlotte. There were 224 Charlottes born in Alabama in 2025 according to data from the Social Security Administration.

Before that, Olivia reigned for three consecutive years. Ava was No. 1 from 2014 to 2020.

Name data comes from the Social Security Administration, which each year publishes the list of the most popular names in the U.S. as a whole and in each state.

Alabama has some differences compared to the national list. The most popular girl name in the United States last year was Olivia, with Charlotte in second.

Some baby girl names are gaining popularity fast in Alabama. Eleanor moved up four spots, now inside the top 10 at No. 9.
The name Ellie also moved up three spots, to No. 10.

The SSA publishes names as they appear on social security cards, so that means the name Ellie, not the nickname, was 10th most popular in Alabama last year.

The SSA only provides name data for names with at least five births in a given year.

In Alabama, there were 938 girl names included in the data. That’s a slight decline over recent years — there were 1,014 different names included in 2022. But overall the trend in naming is heading toward more unique names, rather than a lot of children with the same name.
