And now I might be a tennis fan for life. 🎾 At the risk of sounding like a Brooklyn hipster from 2014 (which, to be fair, I was) my slow-growing appreciation for the sport began with an essay by David Foster Wallace in which he used some clever way of describing the sound the ball makes when it zips through the air. I can’t find the quote now because his papers are so long and needlessly wordy, but the image of a 120 mph serve still resurfaced in my mind every year when I saw, usually too late, that the US Open was over. As a New Yorker it was inexcusable. How could I keep missing this awesome opportunity? So, this year, even though I only had time to attend one day of Fan Week, I was sure to make the most of it. I arrived early, stayed late, and drew as much as possible until some security guard told me it was time to jet. Overall, I’m really grateful to have witnessed that.
