#TSRPolitics: The Trump administration has ended a Biden-era policy that required Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to report and investigate the deaths of former detainees who die within 30 days of being released from custody.

The policy, implemented in 2021, was designed to prevent ICE from avoiding scrutiny by releasing seriously ill detainees shortly before their deaths. Under the updated policy, ICE will only review and report deaths that occur while individuals are still in its custody.

The change comes amid growing concerns about conditions inside ICE detention facilities. Over Labor Day weekend, about 300 detainees at Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey, reportedly participated in a hunger strike. Following a visit to the facility, Democratic Sen. Andy Kim cited overcrowded rooms, unsanitary bathrooms, limited access to hot water, spoiled food, and inadequate medical care for detainees with conditions such as diabetes and cancer.

The Department of Homeland Security called the change “common sense,” stating that ICE is no longer responsible for monitoring individuals once they have been released.
