#TSRUpdtaez: Back in 2023, Columbia, South Carolina, convenience store owner #RickChow was arrested and charged after fatally shooting 14-year-old #CyrusCarmackBelton, after he accused him of shoplifting from his store.

According to apnews, on Monday, a South Carolina jury found Chow not guilty of the murder. Chow maintained that he acted to defend his son when he shot the teen in the back after chasing him from his convenience store.

Prosecutors said Chow reacted after he wrongly thought that the teen had stolen four bottles of water from his store. However, a defense lawyer for Chow claimed he fired at the teen to defend his son, alleging the teen pointed a gun at him.

Prosecutors reportedly acknowledged that the teen had a weapon, but they say the weapon fell on the ground during the chase and that he never threatened anyone with it. Chow chased the teen more than 130 yards from the store. It was argued that various witnesses testified that they didn’t see anything in Carmack-Belton’s hands and didn’t see him point a gun as he ran from the store.

Todd Rutherford, an attorney and representative in the South Carolina Legislature, stood with Carmack-Belton’s father while addressing reporters and said, “This makes us feel as if our children don’t matter, and they do. This makes us feel like Cyrus’ life didn’t matter, and it did. I’ve been practicing law for almost 30 years. I’ve never seen anything like this.
