Growing up neurodivergent often means growing up being taught, directly or indirectly, to override your needs.

The thing is, what can seem like a preference to a neurotypical person is often a necessity for us.

Needing more recovery time.
Needing clear communication.
Needing predictability.
Needing sensory accommodations.
Needing more novelty and movement.
Needing considerations to be made for our nervous system sensitivity.

Our bodies and brains aren’t broken but they are different and therefore so are our needs.

When those needs are constantly minimised, questioned, or treated as inconvenient, we learn to question ourselves.

We often internalise beliefs that we’re being dramatic.
Too sensitive.
Too much.
Too needy.
Spoilt.

Especially if we grew up undiagnosed. This damages our self trust and sense of self. We often experience a mismatch between our experience of ourselves and how we are perceived and experienced by others.

It’s not having needs that is the problem.
You struggle because you’ve spent years disconnecting from them. Overriding them. Trying not to have them and feeling like you’re failing when you still do.

So now, even identifying what you need can feel confusing. Communicating it can feel paralysing. Honouring them can come with internalised guilt, shame, or the fear of disappointing others.

One of the biggest shifts in my own life has been learning to give myself permission to honour my needs.
It has come through not only hearing myself but trusting myself to be the compass of what truly works for me and what doesn’t regardless of how that may land with others, be perceived or received.

To recognise that my needs are real.
To stop treating self-abandonment as a virtue.
To build a life that supports my brain (and nervous system) instead of fighting against them.

If you’re tired of constantly working against yourself, my 1:1 coaching is designed to help you understand your patterns, reconnect with your needs, and create practical systems that actually work for your unique brain and nervous system. 🌶️🧠✨
