But before that, he helped change how millions of Americans understood HIV, AIDS, and the LGBTQ+ community. Born in Cuba and raised in the United States, Pedro was diagnosed with HIV as a teenager. Rather than hide, he chose to educate. He spoke in schools, community centers, and eventually on national television about what it was really like to live with HIV at a time when fear, misinformation, and stigma were everywhere. In 1994, Pedro joined MTV’s The Real World: San Francisco. For many Americans, it was the first time they had seen an openly gay young man living with HIV not as a headline or statistic, but as a person. Viewers watched him fall in love. They watched him advocate. They watched him challenge ignorance with patience and compassion. His visibility helped put a human face on the AIDS epidemic and sparked conversations in living rooms across the country that might not have happened otherwise. Pedro passed away just hours after the final episode of his season aired. More than 30 years later, his courage continues to inspire new generations.
