Mercedes spent $1 billion developing the R129 and it shows in every single panel gap.

This was the last SL built before cost-cutting became a corporate religion at Stuttgart. Double-layer galvanized steel, an automatic roll bar that deploys in 0.3 seconds, and interior tolerances that would make a modern S-Class blush. They don't build them like this because they literally can't justify it anymore.

Here's why the R129 deserves a spot in your garage:

→ It's the last Mercedes engineered without a spreadsheet deciding what corners to cut
→ The M119 V8 in the SL500 is a 300k-mile engine if you keep up on maintenance
→ The ride quality splits the difference between GT car and luxury cruiser in a way nothing modern replicates
→ The M120 V12 in the SL600 is mechanically excessive in the best possible way — and prices reflect that it's becoming a collector piece
→ Clean, low-mile examples are still findable but the window is closing fast

The SL500 is the smart buy. The SL600 is the emotional one. Either way, you're getting into one of the last cars Mercedes built where "best or nothing" actually meant something.

Save this for when you're ready to pull the trigger on one — or send it to someone who keeps talking about getting an R129 but hasn't done it yet.
