The next time you’re in San Francisco, you have to visit two abandoned islands:—Alcatraz Island and Angel Island—which are among the creepiest, most history-filled places in California. 😱

Start with the iconic Alcatraz Island, once the site of a notorious federal penitentiary, with a spooky night tour! 👻 There’s something about arriving just before sunset that gives the island a noticeably eerie feel. 🌅 The experience starts outside, walking the grounds as light fades over the bay before heading inside to explore some of the historic prison cellblocks. 😬 During a night tour, select areas are open that are not normally accessible, including parts of the prison hospital where you’ll learn more about inmate life. 🏥

Angel Island is a lesser-known destination with a very different kind of history. It was a U.S. military site during World War II, and remnants of the wartime buildings and hospitals still remain. 🏢 Many are weathered and empty, and some of the interiors and surrounding trails are open for exploration. 🥾 It’s one of the Bay Area’s most overlooked historic sites!
