Holocaust Survivor Day

June 4 is Holocaust Survivor Day. I’ve been waiting for today to post about an incredible program my daughter participated in this year through the UJA and Sid Jacobson JCC called the Witness Project.

The UJA’s Witness Project pairs high school student and Holocaust Survivors together for a year of learning from each other. The idea is to empower the kids with the survivor’s stories and encourage them to become Upstanders in their communities.

It was so special see the bonds form between the students and the survivors but also between all of the students in this special cohort.

This program was so meaningful for our whole family. We loved hearing Rebecca speak effusively after each session and really enjoyed the parent events including the excellent speakers Ira Kotler, Omer Wenkert, Shye Klein, and Liza Wiemer.

ujafedny and sidjacobsonjcc put so much into ujawitnessprojectli and by attending the annual culminating event (with over 1500 people in attendance this year and raising close to a million dollars!) you could see how important this timely program is for everyone involved, especially the next generation.

For their final project, the students either participate in creating a movie of the survivor’s stories or making a piece of art to bring an aspect of the survivor’s journey to life. Both sides brought such impact to the evening and affected us all so deeply. It also illustrated how a story resonates differently with each person.

We’re so grateful to have met Mireille, John, Krystyna, and Gilda and for them to have shared their stories. It’s our responsibility to teach these stories and the stories of all Holocaust Survivors to the next generation.

It’s so important for our children to hear from these primary sources. We must stand up for them and for all Jews around the world especially in today’s scary world with the increase in global antisemitism.

Save the date for next year’s event: April 13, 2027. The donation link (in my bio) is still open (with funds being matched until June 30th).
