A flesh eating parasite has officially made its way to the United States. Here’s what you need to know 🫡 The New World Screwworm isn’t new OR a worm. It’s actually a fly that lays its eggs in open wounds and when the larvae hatch they feed on living flesh. They caused millions of dollars in damage during the 1900’s until the government eradicated them in 1966 with something called sterile insect technique. Basically they bred millions of sterile male flies to eliminate the population and continue to push them down all the way through Mexico into Panama. From there they set up a biological border using a fly production facility which kept them at bay until now.  The good news is that it is NOT going to affect the U.S. Beef supply. Any affected livestock can be treated and won’t be going into the meat supply. The USDA has had time to prepare for this and have a plan in place for any livestock that’s been impacted.
