Arizona is known for deserts and cactuses… but hidden deep in the White Mountains is something most people have no idea exists. 👀🐟

The Apache trout is Arizona’s official state fish — and it’s found naturally nowhere else on Earth.

By the early 1900s, overfishing, habitat loss, and invasive species had pushed it to the edge of extinction. At one point, it had disappeared from nearly 95% of its native range.

After decades of restoration efforts, the species made an incredible comeback. In 2021, the Apache trout was officially removed from the federal endangered species list, becoming one of the greatest native wildlife recovery stories in the country.

Today, these fish are thriving again in the cold mountain streams of eastern Arizona — proving there’s a whole side of this state that goes way beyond the desert. 🌲🏔️

Did you already know Arizona had its own fish species found nowhere else in the world? 👀👇
