This isnt kindness. This is control through fear.

What you’re seeing is a sheep strapped into a restraint device while an electrode is attached to its lip, a practice known as electro-immobilization. A low-voltage electric current runs down the animal’s spine, forcing temporary paralysis. The sheep cannot move, but it remains fully conscious, aware, sensitive to pain, and unable to escape.

Sheep are prey animals. By nature, they are gentle, calm, and deeply social. But when pinned down, they are terrified. Being restrained triggers their most primal fear: the sensation of being captured by a predator.

This isn’t just uncomfortable; it’s an experience of pure panic for them.

In shearing sheds, where speed is paid by volume, this terror often turns into violence. Investigations have revealed shearers punching, kicking, and slamming sheep to force compliance, leaving bloody wounds that are crudely stitched without pain relief.

The electro-immobilization device is another tool to override the animal’s natural resistance, turning a gentle creature into an immobilized object for human convenience.

RSPCA Australia states clearly: electro-immobilization is not justifiable on welfare grounds. The animal suffers difficulty breathing, potential suffocation, and intense distress — all while conscious and unable to restore mobility until the current stops.

Sheep don’t need to be shorn like this. Their wool overgrowth is the result of selective breeding by humans — genetic manipulation that prioritizes profit over welfare. There are already humane alternatives, like protein-based technologies that cause the fleece to shed naturally without cutting or restraint.
Let’s remember: these animals feel fear. They feel pain. They deserve gentleness, not immobilization.
If you love nature, if you believe in kindness — share this. Let’s stop treating gentle beings as if they’re machines.
