Writer Lee Escobado compiled an opinionated ranking of the “NBA Lottery’s Biggest Draft Busts of the Decade”, where we see Suggs claiming the No. 3 spot (ahead of out-the-leaguers #DraganBender, #NikStauskas and #JoshJackson… 🧐 

I’ve read some fairly lazy analyses on this team’s young guns in the past, but I’ve never been so frustrated with a writer’s evident lack of knowledge about both a player they’re criticizing, as well as the team they play for. Get a load of this…

Escobado on Suggs ➤ “This one hurts, as it’s still so soon in Suggs’s young career. An explosive, dynamic lead guard on a Gonzaga team that made the 2021 NCAA Tournament Final, it was expected Suggs would be the Magic’s unstoppable point-of-attack. The Magic already had a ton of talented two-way wings and saw 2020 first-round pick Cole Anthony as more of a backup, leading the way for Suggs to take over as the starter. But Suggs has fallen to the third-string point guard behind Anthony and Fultz. In his rookie year, his defense was atrocious and he was limited by first a hand injury and then ankle issues. Suggs finished his sophomore season with averages of 9.9 points, 2.9 assists, and three rebounds per game while appearing in more games (53) than he had in his rookie season (48). But there were some signs of life.“

Before people criticize me for being so upset about opinion pieces like these, or how I shouldn’t be taking DeadSpin seriously, let me remind you that writers with platforms like these have the ability to heavily play into narratives that aren’t necessarily true. 

For instance, Suggs only played point guard from October-November when #MarkelleFultz was injured. From then on, he would play shooting guard. It’s a red flag when you read his description of Suggs as the team’s “third-string point guard.”

Suggs was also (semi-arguably) the team’s best defender, taking the tougher matchups in the latter half of the season. You can see the defensive jumps he took from 2021-22 to 2022-23.

Thoughts? No chance he deserves the “bust” title. ⤵️
