South Africa freed an entire country in 1990. It kept one port until 1994.

Walvis Bay is Namibia’s only deep water port. South Africa claimed it by inheritance, Britain annexed it in 1878 and bolted it onto the Cape Colony, before South West Africa even existed.

So when Namibia’s constitution said the port was Namibian, South Africa said no, and sent in more troops.

Why? Leverage. Control the port, control the trade.
