Kim Son was founded in the 1980s by the La family, which immigrated to Houston after fleeing the communist government in Vietnam.

Now, the flagship of Houston’s iconic Vietnamese restaurant will eventually have to shut its doors due to the Interstate 45 expansion project.

Kim Son’s chief operating officer, Toa La, said they have known about the possible expansion for a while addding that the family business is still in negotiations with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

“As of right now, we don’t have a true plan,” he said. “How do we get to have another presence for the next 40 years? But, with that being said, I’m getting old.”

La said he thinks the Jefferson location will likely have to close sometime during mid-2026.
