We're a few days away from the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, with some events scheduled for this weekend in and around Houston, a city with one of the largest Hispanic populations in the country..

Hispanic Heritage Month, which is observed from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, will fill the city with events and activities that encapsulate the Latino culture, its music and food.

Originating from Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 under the President Lyndon B. Johnson administration to honor and celebrate the Hispanic and Latino contributions to the U.S., the commemoration grew into a 30-day celebration when President Ronald Reagan signed it into law in 1988.
