Marilyn Lane, 78, has cared for her four adopted children for decades, all of whom have varying degrees of intellectual disabilities. 

On Tuesday, as the family continued to wait for their power to be restored, Lane’s children kept themselves busy at the house.

Markus, 33, helped clear debris from the front yard with his 23-year-old brother Bryan, while 14-year-old Anthony watched Peppa Pig in the living room. Just a few feet away, 11-year-old Christiana listened to the family’s radio. Lane’s granddaughter, Jordan, 19, helped her around the house.

They moved into a modest one-story home in north Harris County about two years ago, seeking better access to health care. Living off an hourly wage, the Lane family has gotten by over the last few years. However, after Hurricane Beryl tore through the Houston area last week, the family’s situation has become increasingly dire.

“We’re trying to live. Trying to survive,” Lane said, her voice filled with concern. “I’ve kind of given up.”

Over the course of a blisteringly hot week, the family of seven had lost all the food in their refrigerator — twice. 

Lane said that they have their own generator in the back of the house, but it broke during the deadly derecho earlier this year and they haven’t been able to get it fixed over the last few months.
