After a week-long stall due to Hurricane Beryl, participating Houston Latin Restaurant Week owners are ready to welcome customers into their businesses with extended dates through July 26.

Latin Restaurant Weeks began July 5 this year, three days before Hurricane Beryl, and was set to end on July 19. On the day after the storm, about 80% of the 87 listed restaurants were without power.

LRW cofounder Karinn Chavarria made the decision to extend the campaign that aims to help the local economy and establishments.

“I don’t think anybody knew how badly the hurricane would affect businesses. So much, in fact, that they have lost so much profit,” Chavarria said. “Not only is it the business owners that have lost profits, it’s also the employees who have lost wages.”

LWR participants and business owners, Jose Esparza from tjbirriaymas and Angel Cabrera from tacosdonalena, say that LRW is a great place for Houstonians to try new food from all types of ethnic backgrounds including authentic Mexican food, which shouldn’t be confused with Tex-Mex, although it’s also an option.

LRW extension allows Houstonians to grab a good deal on authentic food from various local Latino-owned businesses. Other participating restaurants include sweetsbybelen, mamajuanacafehouston and losranchitosrestaurant.
