In an email to those campus leaders, Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles wrote, "your results demonstrate that you are working to be a proficient instructional leader and need to continue making progress toward that goal."

Shortly after principals received their performance ratings, the state-appointed administration found itself again embroiled in internal strife and public controversy. 

Miles criticized the city's daily newspaper, the Houston Chronicle, over its publication of the specific principals who received an email about their potential removal. 

In a statement to news outlets on Friday, Miles said he was "outraged." He described the list of principals as "unverified" and "illegally obtained." He announced "an independent investigation into the source of this information."

Miles also sent an email about the leak to principals, which Houston Public Media obtained. It included a detail not made public in his other messages: the district told principals it had threatened legal action.

"We are investigating the release of the names, and we have asked the Chronicle to take the names down or face legal action from us," Miles wrote to principals.

The Houston Chronicle took the list down and attached an editor's note to the story. "The Houston Chronicle initially published the names of 117 principals listed as recipients of the email," the note stated. "The news organization then received a tip that the district may have included someone erroneously in its distribution. In its editorial discretion, the Chronicle took down the list of names."

The Houston Chronicle did not provide a response over the weekend to Miles' criticism or further comment on the decision to take down the list.
