The 53-year-old ice rink has been closed since May while undergoing its most extensive renovation. Houston-area visitors will likely find a smoother skating experience after the rink's $1 million updates.

Brad Berman, the president of American Sports Entertainment Company, which operates the rink as the mall's tenant, said the new system will be more energy efficient and should result in a thinner, better-quality sheet of ice.

The cost to skate at the Galleria, which Berman said is $18 for adults and $15 for children, will not increase as a result of the renovation.
