Twenty students in the Spanish National Honor Society at Humble Summer Creek High School were told to remove the honor society stoles because they were against district policy, prompting outrage among students, their teacher and LULAC. 

"(The students) felt humiliated. They feel like their identity was taken away. In order to receive your diploma, you have to give up your identity, which it shouldn't be like this," Judith Bautista, the students' Spanish teacher who recently left Humble ISD, said. 

Bautista, along with some of her students and their parents, participated in a Thursday news conference outside the school to discuss the incident and what they want to see done in response. 

Humble ISD's Jamie Mount says the stoles were actually approved by a campus administrator, but the word was never passed along. 

"It was a communication error. We know that there's no way to get that moment back, however we are reaching out to provide a photo of the graduates with the stoles and to edit the graduation video to include their photo with the stoles. The students are disappointed and we are also disappointed." 

#LULAC says it was a clear case of racial discrimination and that Humble ISD needs more Hispanic representation in leadership. The organization says it plans to file a grievance with the Humble ISD board.
