An oyster company based in Houston and a local restaurant have joined forces to restore an oyster reef in San Leon, Galveston Bay.
 
The project, named Rett Reef, involves using a 300-ton pile of oyster shells to create a new surface for young oysters to grow on. The reef was damaged during Hurricane Ike in 2008 and will not be harvested by the for-profit oyster company.
