Steel City Women knocked off defending UWS2 champion Rockford Raptors 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Providence Catholic - and with two of eight matches down, the title race is alive.

Rockford finished 7W-1L last season and beat Steel City 2-0 a year ago. But those who’ve been around this team since their semi-professional debut last season has watched the hardening.

The Lincoln-Way East connection opened the scoring early. In the 4th minute, Bre Herlihy slipped Thea Gerfen for the opener. Gerfen was a standout all afternoon for the red-n-black.

Herlihy buried one herself on the hour. Mariana Pinto added insurance to overwhelm the champions.
In goal, Hannah Fedinec was outstanding - stuffing multiple 1-v-1 breaks to keep momentum firmly in Steel City’s hands.

Bre Herlihy keeps showing up in the biggest moments. After a goal and assist in Week One, Steel City’s all-time leading scorer followed it with a goal and two assists Saturday. It’s seven goals and four assists all-time for the club.

The sides meet again June 28 in Rockford. But for now, the race is on.
