In this podcast clip, Kenneth Shropshire looks back at a time when sports was often viewed as just games, entertainment, or at most a family-owned business. He explains how, more than 30 years ago, the idea of treating sports business as a serious academic and professional discipline was still taking shape.

Shropshire talks about the shift that began happening as universities started introducing sports business as a real area of study, helping students and professionals think more deeply about the industry behind the games. He also shares that he and longtime Columbia University colleague Scott Rosner are working on a new edition of their book, exciting news for anyone who has been waiting for an updated release.

This clip is a great look at how sports business evolved from a niche idea into a respected field of study, and why that shift continues to matter for the future of the industry.
