11,000 Cuban children are waiting for surgery

Dr. Liane works at the Frank País Orthopaedic Hospital in Havana, a national reference hospital for orthopaedics in Cuba. Tightened U.S. sanctions limit access to medicines, medical equipment, spare parts, fuel and international payments. Medical supplies often have to be purchased through third countries, which increases costs and delays deliveries.

Reuters reported in March 2026 that 96,000 Cubans were on a surgical waiting list, including 11,000 children. More than 300 paediatric surgeries per week were reportedly affected by shortages of medicines, oxygen, anaesthesia or other medical supplies. Cuban officials warned that the waiting list could continue to grow. Cuba’s foreign minister links this situation to the U.S. energy blockade and the wider impact of the embargo.

The pressure on the healthcare system is also visible in broader indicators. The Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) calculated that infant mortality in Cuba rose from 4.0 per 1,000 live births in 2019 to 9.9 in 2025. That is more than double. According to CEPR, the tightening of U.S. sanctions is an important factor behind this increase.

In the interview, Dr. Liane says that the blockade does not only affect the government, but also hospitals, doctors and patients. At the same time, she stresses that healthcare remains a priority in Cuba, and that medical staff continue to look for ways to keep providing care.

The United States has imposed an economic embargo on Cuba since 1960. Since January 2026, the pressure has been further increased: the U.S. is threatening countries that want to supply oil to Cuba.

The consequences are visible across the country: daily power outages, public transport under pressure, declining tourism and hospitals forced to postpone medical care.
