Ask this guy five years ago if he would’ve started a women’s golf program at a DIII school. I went from asking women on campus to learn how to play golf to recruiting players from 9 different states, and from seeing scoring averages drop by 16% after year one to another 13% this year. Not to mention building one of the most welcoming, fun, and supportive groups I’ve had the privilege of being a part of. These girls are smart, work hard, laugh harder than anyone I know, and open the door for so many girls growing up in the sport who want to play in college. Next year is going to be so exciting. Still, this year has brought some incredible moments: setting our own records for lowest team scores, having one of our top players finish first as an individual twice, logging even more birdies, and watching some near hole-in-ones and some amazing chip-ins from around the greens! We’ve even tried new foods together, some by accident. We’ve left a putter and multiple sand wedges on the greens. And we’ve heard and shared some unbelievable stories on our van rides to and from matches. Beyond our scorecards, our tenacity and grit are the payoff of hard work, just as much a reward as a low round. Also, watching these girls not only pick up their teammates mid-round or post-round, keeping spirits high, but also boosting their opponents' morale is what sets us apart. Golf is hard enough. It’s so amazing to see them encourage their playing partners even in competition. It’s been a long season, and I still can’t believe it’s over. Can’t wait for preseason to come in August.
