The International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor Karim Khan has been formally suspended pending a vote by member states on whether to remove him from office, the court's governing body announced.⁣
⁣
A diplomatic source told Reuters that the ICC's executive bureau found Khan had committed serious misconduct following an 18-month investigation into allegations of non-consensual sexual interactions with a female aide. The bureau has recommended his removal. ⁣
⁣
Khan's lawyers rejected the decision, calling it "unlawful, procedurally unfair and unsupported by evidence," and said he denies any wrongdoing.⁣
⁣
The 125 ICC member states will now vote in a special session. At least 63 countries must support removal for it to take effect.⁣
⁣
The suspension deepens a crisis at a court already under pressure on multiple fronts. Khan issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over the Gaza conflict, as well as for Russian President Vladimir Putin over alleged war crimes in Ukraine. The United States has imposed sanctions on the court in response to its actions against Israel.⁣

Khan has been on voluntary leave since May 2025. He is the first ICC prosecutor to be formally suspended by the court's oversight body.⁣
