The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday (June 3) elected Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe to join the 15-member UN Security Council from January 1, 2027 until December 31, 2028. ⁣

The contest for places was tough. Despite lobbying hard, Germany missed out on one of the two spots reserved for Western European countries, while the Philippines narrowly lost the Asia-Pacific seat to Kyrgyzstan.⁣
