Long before jazz became America’s most influential art form, New Orleans composers were creating piano music that blended African, Afro-Caribbean, Creole, and European musical traditions. These compositions laid the groundwork for the rhythms, improvisation, and expressive styles that would later define jazz.

Many of these works survived only as fragile sheet music and were never recorded—until now.

The First Piano Professors and the Lost Music of Early New Orleans brings this forgotten chapter of music history back to life through rare first-edition scores, historic photographs, instruments, and newly commissioned recordings of music not known to have been heard since the 19th century.

Drawing from a remarkable archive assembled over three decades by pianist and curator John Davis, this exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience the sounds that helped shape New Orleans’ musical legacy before jazz had a name.
