Could you imagine if Maddy Perez wasn’t Latina? Apparently, that’s what HBO execs had in mind for the character according to a recent article by The Hollywood Reporter. Chicana breakout star Alexa Demie, THR’s latest digital cover star, discussed how she’s had trouble getting non-stereotypical roles as a Latina, and Sam Levinson said he had to fight for her to get the role of Maddy, as HBO originally pictured her as a blond cheerleader. 

Latina actresses have spoken for years about being boxed in by Hollywood, with Christina Milian, Dascha Polanco, and Michelle Rodriguez saying that there are only so many roles Latinas are offered in the entertainment industry.
