The Supreme Court just allowed Alabama to use a congressional map that its own judges ruled was drawn to deliberately dilute Black voting power. 

The ruling eliminates one of Alabama's two predominantly Black congressional districts — shifting the state's congressional delegation from a 5-2 to a 6-1 Republican advantage by carving up the district currently represented by Rep. Shomari Figures.

This isn't a new fight. In 2023, the Supreme Court itself ruled Alabama's original map likely violated the Voting Rights Act. The state redrew it — still with only one Black district. A federal panel rejected that map AGAIN, finding it was drawn with "discriminatory animus." The Supreme Court just overruled them anyway.

Justice Sotomayor dissented sharply, writing that the court chose "a chaotic election, held under a never-before-used congressional map that intentionally discriminates against Black Alabamians, that Alabama adopted in unashamed defiance of a prior court order."

"The Supreme Court's decision gives cover to Alabama and others to deliberately and openly discriminate against Black voters without fear of any consequence," said Deuel Ross of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
