“World Ocean Day is more than a day to celebrate the ocean. It is a chance to face what is happening to it and commit to the actions needed to allow corals and marine life to survive and thrive.

The ocean is under pressure from every direction. Warming seas, overfishing, untreated sewage, pollution, coastal construction, shipping, mining, and overtourism are all taking a toll. In two decades of diving I have watched many coral reefs in the Caribbean crumble. Cyanobacteria smothering hard coral in Indonesia. Illegal fishermen hunting hammerheads by the thousand in the Galapagos. Fish populations a fraction of what they once were. Ecosystems that took thousands of years to build coming apart within a single human lifetime.

The ocean produces half the oxygen we breathe, regulates our climate, and feeds billions of people. If we stay on this course, the consequences will reach far beyond the water.

But I have also seen the other side. Reefs inside properly enforced no-take marine protected areas so thick with fish I could not see the coral beneath them. Blue whales still alive in an ocean that nearly erased them. Cabo Pulmo, where a community chose to stop fishing and watched shark populations and fish biomass explode back to life within decades. Palau, which banned commercial shark fishing and saw its reefs and shark populations rebound into some of the healthiest in the Pacific. Marine ecosystems that, when given time and space to heal, actually recover.

The ocean can heal, faster than we imagined possible. We can transition away from fossil fuels, regulate fishing, treat sewage before it enters the ocean, and address every challenge destroying it. We just need to choose to change.”
