The men who made Britain’s finest blades were dead by forty — and some of them chose it.

In the grinding workshops of 1840s Sheffield, men leaned over spinning sandstones twelve hours a day, breathing a constant cloud of stone grit and steel dust. They called the result grinders’ asthma: cough, breathlessness, then slow suffocation, often before thirty-five. The workshops could have been ventilated — the methods existed. The masters wouldn’t pay. And some grinders refused the safety measures themselves, because fewer working grinders meant higher wages for those left alive.

So who paid for a respectable Sheffield blade — and who decided that price was acceptable?
