Benjamin Del Real is the man who was shot near a Secret Service checkpoint on May 23, a Chicago law firm representing him said Friday. He was touring the city at the time.⁠

Del Real needed surgery and is still recovering from his injuries, Clifford Law Offices said. They said they’re working to learn more about what happened.⁠

“At this time, we are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and gathering all available facts. We will continue to work with the appropriate authorities to determine exactly what occurred and to ensure a full and accurate understanding of the events that led to our client’s severe injuries. Our primary focus remains on our client’s recovery and well-being,” attorney Joseph T. Murphy said in a statement.⁠

Multiple sources familiar with the investigation previously told News4 the bystander was a 25-year-old man who was shot in the abdomen and that he was rushed to George Washington University Hospital in critical condition.⁠

News4 has repeatedly asked the Secret Service about the shooting. They said in a statement the day it occurred: "It remains unclear whether the bystander was struck by the suspect's initial gunfire or during the exchange of gunfire." News4 reached out again Friday.⁠
