In Japan, some mature trees are relocated using a technique called nemawashi. Arborists first expose and prune the roots months in advance, encouraging new fine roots to grow close to the trunk. The root ball is then wrapped in soil, burlap, and supports to keep it intact. Cranes, rollers, or tracks move the tree to a prepared site where it is replanted and carefully watered. This reduces transplant shock and improves survival rates.
