These clouds resemble asperitas formations, a rare pattern with wave shaped undersides that can appear like a rough sea. Scientists think they develop when turbulent air, gravity waves, and changes in wind speed distort existing cloud layers after storms. Variations in light and cloud thickness enhance the dramatic effect, creating the illusion of an ocean suspended overhead.
