One of the fastest ways to ruin a new relationship is by convicting someone in the present for the sins of your past.

When you've been hurt, betrayed, lied to, or abandoned, it's natural to become hypervigilant. Your mind starts looking for signs that history is about to repeat itself. The problem is that fear doesn't just protect you from getting hurt again—it can also stop you from being loved.

Instead of seeing your partner for who they are, you start seeing them through the lens of old wounds. You question their intentions. You assume the worst. You project yesterday's pain onto today's person.

And eventually, they begin paying the price for mistakes they never made.

The irony is that the very behaviours meant to prevent abandonment often create it. Constant suspicion, accusations, and emotional defensiveness can push away the very person who was trying to stay.

You can't start a healthy chapter while carrying the unresolved baggage of the last one.

If you don't heal, you don't move on—you simply change faces and repeat the same cycle.

A new relationship doesn't just require a new person.

It often requires a new version of you.
