What an honor it was to surprise Ms. Rice with her inclusion in a beautiful mural at CarMax Park, created by the incredibly talented Ed Trask.

The mural, located in The Landing in left field, is entitled, "The Flying Squirrels are Richmond, VA." As a member of the Richmond 34, an educator, activist and our ambassador, Ms. Rice has made a lasting impact within our organization and community.

About the Richmond 34
ㅤ
On February 22, 1960, students from Virginia Union University peacefully protested at Thalhimers Department Store in downtown Richmond. They sat at a whites-only lunch counter and demanded to be served. When they refused to leave, 34 students were arrested and charged with trespassing.
ㅤ
Their bravery played a major role in the desegregation of Richmond and helped shape the Civil Rights Movement as a whole.
ㅤ
Many people are still unaware of this important chapter in our city’s history, and we hope to expand awareness of the courageous men and women who changed history forever
