What does it take to turn a scientific breakthrough into a real-world technology? The National Science Foundation is betting $1.5 billion on a new answer.

Dr. Erwin Gianchandani, Assistant Director of NSF's Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships Directorate, joins PTB to break down two major new initiatives designed to accelerate American innovation and maintain U.S. competitiveness in the global tech race.
First, the $250 million relaunch of the SBIR/STTR program — NSF's flagship effort to get deep tech startups off the ground, with a track record of turning $1.6 billion in public investment into $36 billion in follow-on funding.

Second, the new NSF X-Labs initiative — a $1.5 billion bet on sustained, multidisciplinary research teams working on sector-defining platform technologies, from quantum photonics to scientific instrumentation, with 3 to 7 year funding runways designed to eliminate the constant grant proposal cycle that slows researchers down.

The through line: identify where the U.S. must lead, invest before the window closes, and get breakthrough science out of the lab and into the market before competitors do.
