Sleep problems don’t announce exactly what is causing them. One night it feels like stress. Another night it is restless sleep, snoring, a medication taken too late in the day, or a bedtime habit that has slowly started working against rest.

Episode 7 of Beyond the Script gives those questions somewhere practical to land. Dr. Jake Goodman is joined by Sepideh Manafi, a CVS pharmacist and district leader from Charlotte, North Carolina, with more than 30 years of pharmacy experience, for a closer look at sleep health and the choices that can affect it night after night.

Quality sleep is more than falling asleep quickly. It includes getting enough rest, moving through the sleep cycles the body needs, and waking up able to function well the next day. Screens before bed, late caffeine, alcohol, room temperature, exercise and consistency can all make a difference. So can medications - including some decongestants, blood pressure medications and other treatments people may not immediately connect with sleep disruption.

The sleep aisle can raise its own set of questions. Antihistamine sleep aids, melatonin and magnesium are easy to find, but that does not mean every option is right for every person. Timing, side effects, other medications and underlying health concerns all matter, making a pharmacist a useful resource before adding something new to a nightly routine.

Snoring is part of the picture, too. Sometimes it is simply disruptive. Other times, frequent or severe snoring may signal sleep apnea or another concern that deserves medical attention. Knowing when to stop trying to solve a sleep issue alone can be just as important as knowing which bedtime habit to change first.

In Myth or Medicine, familiar sleep beliefs get a reality check: getting through the day does not always mean getting enough sleep, alcohol is not the shortcut to better rest it may seem to be, blue light glasses do not fix insomnia, and lost sleep is not something that can always be erased over the weekend.

Better sleep is not about chasing every new tip or supplement. It starts with understanding what may be disrupting rest - and knowing when a trusted health professional can help point the way forward.
