Your mind going blank in an exam isn’t your memory failing. The information is still there, stress is blocking the door to it.

👉Here’s what actually happens:
When panic hits, stress hormones flood your brain and worry starts consuming the exact working memory you need to retrieve answers. The knowledge didn’t leave. Access did.

Which means the fix isn’t studying more. It’s managing the stress response.

👉BEFORE THE EXAM
1️⃣ THE 10 MINUTE WORRY DUMP:
The morning of the exam, write down every single worry about it for 10 minutes. In a study published in Science, anxious students who did this scored significantly higher. Worries on paper stop circling in your working memory.

2️⃣ PRACTISE UNDER PRESSURE:
In the days before: past questions + timed + no notes. Mild pressure during practice teaches your brain that exam conditions are normal so the real thing doesn’t set off the alarm.

👉WHEN THE BLANK HITS
3️⃣ THE LONG EXHALE RESET:
Inhale, then exhale slowly twice as long as the inhale. Repeat 4–5 times. Long exhales switch off the stress response faster than anything else you can do in your seat. One minute total.

4️⃣ SKIP AND RETURN:
Don’t fight the blank, it gets worse under force. Move to questions you know. As panic drops, retrieval comes back and other questions often cue the exact memory that was blocked. Return in 10 minutes. It’s usually there.

5️⃣ BRAIN DUMP AT THE START:
The second the exam begins, write key formulas and frameworks in the margin while you’re still calm. Now they live on paper instead of in working memory under pressure.

You knew it last night. You still know it. Blanking is a stress problem not a knowledge problem and stress can be managed.
