Your finger is an antenna, and the glass under it is quietly keeping score.

A capacitive touchscreen doesn’t sense pressure. It senses charge. Beneath the cover glass sits a grid of transparent electrodes driven with a small AC voltage, building a uniform electric field across the surface. Your fingertip, being mostly conductive saltwater tied to a large grounded body, distorts that field the instant it gets close. The screen never needs you to push.

Modern phones use projected capacitance, where two layers of electrodes cross at right angles to form a matrix of tiny capacitors at every intersection.

	•	A controller scans rows and columns thousands of times per second
	•	Your finger pulls charge away from the nearest junctions
	•	Mutual capacitance at those nodes drops by a few femtofarads
	•	The chip triangulates the dip into XY coordinates

Because it measures coupling at each crossing independently, it can resolve ten fingers at once. That is why pinch and zoom exist.

Now the paradox: the electrodes must conduct electricity yet let light through, two properties that usually fight each other. Metals conduct but are opaque. Most transparent materials insulate. The answer is indium tin oxide, a ceramic that is roughly 90 percent indium oxide doped with tin. Oxygen vacancies in its lattice release free electrons that carry current, while its wide bandgap of about 4 eV means visible photons lack the energy to be absorbed. Sputtered onto glass in a film tens of nanometers thick, it transmits over 90 percent of light while still conducting.

The whole illusion of touching pixels rests on a material that shouldn’t logically exist: a see-through metal, painted invisibly thin across the thing you stare at every day.
