Granville T. Woods Beat Edison in Court Twice — Nobody Taught You This

Granville T. Woods took Thomas Edison to federal court in 1887 and won. Then Edison came back with a second claim — and Woods won again. Two for two against the most powerful inventor in America, and most people have never heard his name.

Woods was a self-taught electrical engineer born in Columbus, Ohio in 1856 who founded his own company, Woods Electric Co., and invented the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph — a system that allowed moving trains to communicate in real time and prevent deadly collisions. Edison saw the patent and filed a claim saying he invented it first. The federal court disagreed. Twice.

After losing both cases, Edison reportedly offered Woods a job. Woods turned it down, stayed independent, and went on to file over 60 patents covering electrical railway systems, automatic air brakes, and improved telephone transmitters. His work made American rail travel measurably safer. The history books gave Edison the monument and gave Woods a footnote — if that. The patent records, the court documents, and the dates are all still there.
