✊🏾 Everybody knows Mary McLeod Bethune built a university from a dollar and fifty cents — but almost nobody knows her story actually began right here in Georgia. Before the fame, before the White House, she was a young teacher who walked into a schoolhouse in Augusta and found the mission that would define her life. 📖

In 1896, Bethune taught at the Haines Institute, a school for Black children founded by the remarkable Lucy Craft Laney — herself the daughter of formerly enslaved parents. Laney passed down one powerful belief: educate a girl, and you lift an entire community. Bethune took that lesson out of Georgia and into the history books, eventually opening her own school in Florida that became Bethune-Cookman University and advising President Franklin Roosevelt. Two daughters of the South, one Georgia classroom, and a ripple that reached the whole nation. 🙌🏾

Did you know Bethune got her start in Georgia? Drop a comment and let me know — and follow the page so we can keep uncovering the hidden Black history living in all 159 of Georgia’s counties. 👇🏾
