Flagstaff did something 25 years ago that almost no city in the world had done before. 🌌✨

In 2001, it became the world’s first officially designated International Dark Sky City — but the effort to protect its night skies actually started decades earlier.

Long before light pollution became a national conversation, Flagstaff was passing rules to reduce unnecessary lighting and preserve views of the stars.

Today, while many Americans can barely see the Milky Way from where they live, Flagstaff remains one of the best places in the country for stargazing.

The city is now celebrating 25 years of Dark Sky recognition during International Dark Sky Week.
