Tempe Town Lake looks permanent now, but before it existed, the Salt River could completely change overnight.

In January 1993, heavy storms sent floodwater rushing through Tempe while crews were building the newer Mill Avenue Bridge.

The flood damaged the construction site and delayed the project, but the original 1931 bridge stayed open.

By 1999, Tempe Town Lake opened and turned that once-dry riverbed into one of Tempe’s most recognizable spots.
