Ten years ago today, 49 people were murdered at Pulse Nightclub.

My cousin Jeff was one of the survivors.

He was shot multiple times, spent hours bleeding on a bathroom floor, and has endured more than a dozen surgeries since.

Please follow nopulsemuseum for more info.

Today, as we remember those we lost and honor those who survived, I asked him what he wants people to know ten years later.

His answer wasn’t about the shooting.

It was about life.

“Tomorrow isn’t promised.”

He told me that after Pulse, he stopped waiting. If there’s a trip you want to take, take it. If there’s a dream you’ve been putting off, pursue it. If there’s someone you care about, tell them. The clock is ticking for all of us.

But he also shared something else.

Jeff has a rare blood type. When he was rushed to the hospital that night, strangers donated the blood that helped save his life. Years later, he met some of those donors. Different ages. Different backgrounds. Different races. Different beliefs.

None of that mattered.

What mattered was that people showed up for someone they had never met.

In a moment fueled by hate, his life was saved by humanity.

That’s the part of the story I hope we remember today.

We remember the 49 lives lost.

We honor the survivors.

And we continue the work of building a world where our shared humanity matters more than the things that divide us.
