World Day Against Child Labour: Expanding Our Understanding of Exploitation

As we observe the World Day Against Child Labour, it is important to recognize that child exploitation is evolving alongside society and technology.

According to the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNICEF, millions of children worldwide continue to be deprived of their fundamental rights through various forms of labour and exploitation. While traditional child labour remains a global concern, new challenges are emerging in the digital age.

Children are increasingly featured in monetized social media content, reels, and videos that generate income, engagement, and influence for adults. At the same time, children are often used in political campaigns, rallies, and public events to create emotional appeal and shape public perception.

Regardless of the platform or purpose, children should never be treated as tools for profit, publicity, or political gain.

Every child has the right to:
✔ Education
✔ Protection
✔ Privacy
✔ Play and recreation
✔ A safe and dignified childhood

As policymakers, educators, parents, content creators, and community leaders, we must ensure that children's best interests remain at the center of all decisions affecting them.

Protecting children today requires addressing not only traditional forms of child labour but also emerging forms of digital and social exploitation.

Childhood is not a commodity. It is a right.
