Take a trip down memory lane to the defunct SeaWorld of Ohio, the beloved marine park that once drew millions to Aurora, Ohio.  

Did you know these fascinating facts about our bygone “Oceana of the Midwest”?

1. A Lake Separated the Fun
SeaWorld of Ohio (later SeaWorld Cleveland) opened in 1970 directly across Geauga Lake from the Geauga Lake Amusement Park. For decades, they operated as separate parks with a shared marketing agreement, creating a massive, two-gate vacation destination.  

2. Shamu Left For the Ohio Winters
Every summer, the park’s star, Shamu (a stage name for multiple orcas over the years), performed in a massive stadium, splashing fans in the “Splash Zone.” When the park closed for the winter, the orcas and other animals were transported to warmer SeaWorld parks in Florida or California.  

3. No Coasters allowed
Due to a non-compete clause with its neighbor, Geauga Lake, SeaWorld of Ohio was never permitted to build roller coasters. While Geauga Lake focused on thrills, SeaWorld cornered the market on animal exhibits, educational shows, and a more relaxed atmosphere.  

4. Birth of a “Mega-Park” (Briefly)
In 2001, Six Flags (which owned Geauga Lake) purchased SeaWorld Cleveland. They merged the two properties to create Six Flags Worlds of Adventure, the only park in the world to offer a marine life park, a thrill park, and a water park within a single gate. This ambitious venture only lasted until 2003.  

5. From Marine Life to Water Slides
After Cedar Fair purchased the properties, SeaWorld’s side of the lake was transformed. In 2005, it reopened as the Wildwater Kingdom water park, using some of the existing SeaWorld infrastructure. Wildwater Kingdom closed permanently in 2016, marking the end of the site’s era as an entertainment venue.
